What does stress have to do with anti aging?

Even though the bulk of anti aging research is focused on the best anti aging wrinkle cream, the evidence is irrefutable: 80-90% of all illness, disease, and accelerated aging is stress related.

Stress is the number one health problem we face today. In fact, stress is known as the “silent killer.” Stress is also a common factor in many psychological challenges such as depression and anxiety.

If we truly want to slow down the aging process, we must incorporate anti aging stress relief habits into our daily lives. Better yet, we must learn how to prevent stress in order to reverse the aging process.

Otherwise, the anti aging products we take internally or apply topically will be no more effective than putting a Band-aid on a gaping wound.

How Does Stress Age Us?

First of all, it’s important to understand that not all stress is harmful. Just the right amount of stress can help increase our productivity and enhance creativity.

However, excess stress and prolonged stress can be very damaging. In addition, every person reacts to stress differently. Thus, identifying, preventing and relieving stress is critical to looking and feeling younger.

According to the latest anti aging research, there are numerous ways that stress ages us. Two of the most damaging effects of stress on the body are excess acid and excess hormone production.

All forms of stress—whether physical, mental, or emotional—create free radicals and acidity in the body, which speed up the aging process. The free radicals damage healthy cells and the acid waste has an oxidizing (i.e., rusting) effect on all bodily tissues and organs.

In addition, stress causes an increased production of two hormones called cortisone and cortisol. The increased production of these hormones alone is responsible for many of the stress-related symptoms of premature aging, including illness and disease.

Our anti aging research and experience reveals that an effective stress relief program includes elements from four broad categories: (1) physical, (2) psychological, (3) environmental and (4) spiritual.

Four Categories of Stress Relief

  1. Physical. Most forms of physical activity can help clear your mind and release emotional tension. As long as you’re physically moving while focusing on being present in the moment (rather than revolving stressful thoughts in your mind), you can experience stress relief.

    Try window shopping or gardening or running or swimming or dancing or rebounding or stress relief yoga. While some people prefer to exercise by themselves, others prefer social exercise and do best when joining classes. What is most important is to simply get moving every day.

    In addition to physical activity, one of the simplest yet most effective ways to minimize the negative physiological effects of stress on your body is to breathe deeply and fully.   2. Psychological. Stress often begins in the mind. Negative thoughts give rise to negative emotions. Stress is the way our bodies react physically, mentally, emotionally and behaviorally to any change in the status quo. Even imagined change can cause stress. In fact, most stress is caused by ruminating on the past or worrying about the future.

    Stress often occurs when something happens that we feel imposes a demand on us. When we perceive that we cannot cope or feel inadequate to meet the demand, we begin to feel stress.

    The first step in reducing a stress reaction is to simply become aware of when it happens. Learn to consciously release the negative feelings and redirect one’s thoughts. Many effective stress relief tools are available to facilitate growth in this area.

    Many people experience mental/emotional stress relief through activities such as relaxed reading, listening to music, knitting or sewing, playing an instrument, singing, playing board games or solving crossword puzzles.
  3. Environmental. Creating a stress-free home and work environment is very important. Keep the noise level down as much as possible. De-clutter your home and office space regularly. If you need help in this area, hire a professional. It can make a huge difference in your stress levels.

    Use as much natural lighting as possible and avoid florescent lighting (which can aggravate the nerves). Another major stressor comes from toxic household and personal care products. Whenever possible, choose natural and organic products.

    Take time daily to nourish your spirit in whatever way(s) you choose, such as praying, meditating, journaling, walking, reading sacred scriptures or other inspired works.
