Ten Simple Tips for Body Cleansing and Detox
By Nancy Hearn, CNC
Body cleansing is not one of the most popular health topics. In fact, I find that people often run the other way when body cleansing is mentioned.
However, regular body cleansing and detoxification is one of the most important things we can do to improve our health and longevity.
Medical researchers and scientists have proven that accumulated acid waste in the body causes cellular deterioration and aging. According to Sang Whang, scientist and author of Reverse Aging, we get old because we are not disposing of all our internally generated wastes and toxins and the leftovers accumulate within our body.
There are many different ways to cleanse and detoxify your body, most of which are quite simple. The following are 10 ways you can begin now to assist your body’s detoxifying process.
- Breathe deeply throughout the day. Respiration should be our primary way to eliminate toxins, but for most people it is not because of shallow breathing habits. Thus, you can significantly help your body to remove toxins by focusing on expelling your air completely and thoroughly many times a day. When you do this, you will naturally breathe more deeply.
- Drink more pure water. The optimal water intake is half your body weight in ounces of pure water. Start measuring your water intake and increase it until you have reached the optimal amount. Start drinking water as soon as you wake up in the morning and try to drink a full quart before breakfast.
- Exercise moderately daily. Exercise is the master signaling system that tells our cells to grow instead of die. If you haven’t been exercising regularly, start now with a 15-minute daily walk. The most effective form of exercise for body cleansing is jumping on a mini-trampoline, or rebounder.
- Eat more raw food. Rather than focusing on restricting food you’re your diet, I recommend eating more raw food. Fresh food is more nutrient dense so your appetite will be more satisfied and the extra fiber will allow your body to remove toxins more efficiently. Increase your intake especially of raw vegetables and sprouts first, with lesser amounts of fresh fruits and raw nuts and seeds.
- Drink lemon water. First thing when you wake up in the morning, squeeze the juice of half a lemon in 16 ounces of water and then drink it. Lemon water is an excellent liver cleanse.
- Brush your skin. Our skin is our largest eliminative organ. Thus, before showering, brush your skin lightly with a dry skin brush, a loofa sponge, or raw silk gloves. This is a very effective way to remove dead skin to assist your body’s ability to eliminate toxins through your skin.
- Drink daily detox tea. There are many daily detox herbal teas available at health food stores that are helpful for removing debris from the colon. Ask your health practitioner for recommendations.
- Take a sauna. Heat therapies such as saunas are effective ways of removing toxins through sweating. Consider a series of saunas to increase how much and how deeply you sweat. The most effective type of sauna for detoxification of toxins from the body, including heavy metals, is the Far-Infrared sauna.
- Enjoy hydrotherapy. Alternating hot and cold water while showering stimulates blood flow through your organs of elimination. The Aqua-chi footbath is another form of hydrotherapy—a relaxing and effective way to energize and detoxify your body.
- Sleep with your window open at night. Even if it’s a bit cold out, crack your window at night and put on a few more blankets. Breathing fresh air is critical while you sleep. If it’s not possible to open your window, then consider investing in an air filter for your bedroom.
Taking a few proactive steps now to detoxify your body will lower your risk of illness and boost your immune system. In addition, you will most likely experience increased energy levels and vitality and help to slow down the aging process.
